Kerrey Williams: Reflections on 1001 Circles
“In 2016 I embarked on a creative journey to create an artwork a day, sometimes more. With one A5 visual diary and a mission to complete a drawing a day, I started by drawing a 12cm diameter circle with pencil. In each circle, using a black fineliner or marker I aimed to create a detailed drawing, pattern or design.
My inspiration would come from what was happening during my day or from my imagination.
Exactly 2 years later I’d created 830 circle drawings and hadn’t yet become tired of the daily practice. I continued on until I reached 1000 and then just one more. The 1001st freehand circle drawing was drawn in the 16th book.
The details, variety, themes and names of each circle creation gives a glimpse into my daily thoughts and life over a period of 2½ years. They include family and friends’ birthdays, seasons or happenings of the day and even an unfortunate accident which had me on pain killers and in hospital waiting for surgery (can you spot these circles?).
As an interior decorator I love the impact of seeing them all together. You might enjoy them too, or favour a particular circle or a particular mark or motif, or the marks made from all 1001; the bleed through of markers and fineliners on the page I used as backing for each drawing – “Incidental Mandala”.”
Why not make it into a fabulous escape!
